About
Jacksonville
Located on the
upper Atlantic coast of Florida near the mouth of the St. Johns
River, Jacksonville has a population of about 795,000.
Interstate 10 from the west terminates in Jacksonville and
Interstate 95 passes near downtown along a North-South path.
Jacksonville International Airport is 15 miles north of
downtown. St. Augustine, the oldest city in the country,
is 40 miles south on the coast and Daytona Beach is another 50
miles further south. Situated at the mouth of the St. Johns
River, about 20 miles from downtown Jacksonville, Mayport Naval
Station has special meaning to Thetis Bay crewmen aboard during
the Cuban missile blockade in October, 1962. When not on station
in the Bahama Islands, Mayport was the ship's temporary home
port.
